1.23 Sun Protection Policy

Policy statement

Cullompton Pre-School is committed to the health and safety of children in its care. We will ensure that all children, and staff, stay safe in the sun.

We aim to ensure that children are protected when playing in the sun during session times at our pre-school.

We ask parents to sign a Sun Cream Agreement (recorded on our Admission Form) when their child starts at pre-school. We monitor children carefully for signs of sunburn and act appropriately and responsibly.

It is the responsibility of the parent/carer to apply sun cream to their child before arrival at pre-school. There are many sun creams available that can be applied once at the beginning of the day that will give protection during the length of a session/day at pre-school.

We encourage children to wear hats and stay undercover between 11 am and 2 pm. We ensure that there are lots of shaded/covered areas accessible in our outside area and adapt our outdoor activities to encourage children to play in these shaded areas.

We ask parents to dress children in clothing that will give them additional protection from the sun i.e. long sleeved t-shirt.

Children are able to access the indoor environment at all times.

We ensure that fresh drinking water is always available to the children.

We remind the children of the importance of drinking plenty during hot weather and spend time talking to them about sun safety, appropriate to age and understanding.

Staff are educated in the importance of sun safety and wear sun hats when outside to provide positive role models for the children. Pre-School have a large quantity of hats for children who do not bring their own to pre-school.
